REIT stands for Real Estate Investment Trust. It is a type of company structure set up for the primary purpose of managing real estate assets on behalf of investors. But since it was first created, it has evolved to include holdings outside of the real estate sector. REITs are a favorite investment vehicle of investors who are looking for passive income because they are required by law to distribute most of the cash flow from the underlying assets to the investors as dividends.
